"The bigger the pride, the bigger the fall." Pride is what causes people to lose a lot since, one moment they may think they're at the top and the next they actually end up below where they started. In "Scarlet Ibis" by James Hurst, the narrator ends up being to prideful with his little brother Doodle which, then leads to negative outcomes from the said pride.
