The definition of power is: ‘the ability to direct or influence the behavior of others the course of events’. In the novella of ‘Mice and Men’ power is very complex however it can be broken down into four main parts. Physical power, power of seduction, power of hierarchy and power of dreams. Each character symbolist a different aspect of power such as Lennie has physical power however he doesn’t have mental power that George has but George don’t have power of hierarchy as Curley has. Furthermore Curley’s wife is the women on the ranch and she has the power of seduction power. The novella was set in the 1930s when America was in a great depression. Power meant a lot to people back then, many rich people lost all that they had over 1 night.

In particular, the dream that George and Lennie have seems so very real and within their grasp that the less fortunate and ‘weaker’ characters of Crooks and Candy want to join in with it. QUOTE. It seems sad that at the end of Chapter 4 Crooks’ glimpse of achieving acceptance and equality amongst others is nothing but a now closed memory. The line ‘I didn’t mean it. I wouldn’t want to go no place like that. Just fooling’, highlights that after being put in his place only moments earlier by Curley’s wife he realizes that nothing in the near future will in fact change for him. Power shifts very quickly this in intentionally by Steinbeck because he want to show how the it was in the 1930 the power was very shifty because of the great depression people were looking for work and stability in addition to this quote crooks know it won’t happen because he know society will not accepted him because of his skin color he goes back to his own little corner rubbing ointment on his back is also very symbolic it shows that he is physical crippled this can also be referred back the society of the 1930s most black people are either physicality or mentally handicapped by all the abuse that they get from white people
