Hamlet is completely aware of his actions throughout the story. He knows that everyone thinks that he is going completely insane and he wants everyone to think that. He wants everyone to underestimate him, so whenever the moment presents itself, he can put any plan he has, into action. "I essentially am not in madness, But mad in craft." (III. iv. 187-8.) During the play, the only people who ever address Hamlet as mad, were the king and his henchmen, but even their sanity is questionable. Polonius is the first to admit that Hamlet has gone mad, and that is only because Ophelia denied him. He then tells the king, "Your noble son is mad."
