Perseverance is shown through the characters Frank McCourt and Lutie Johnson. In Angela's Ashes we are looking through the eyes of Frank, who at the time is a young boy. He shows perseverance by not letting the absence of his father and he sickness of his mother cause his family starvation. He takes it upon himself to provide food and drink for his family. In The Street, we read about Lutie Johnson. She is a black, single mother living in the 1940's. This fact within itself shows perseverance because she had to raise her kids alone and as minority. She has to focus on providing for her family and caring for it, and it takes a lot not to give up and run away from. She even in a simpler act as not giving up on reading a sign shows the reader a lot about her personality and perseverance for her children. …show more content…
In the paragraphs given from Angela's Ashes, Frank skips school with his siblings and must steal food and drinks in order to feed his family. He does this besides his moral beliefs and judgment that may come from on lookers or even his family. Although it is difficult to steal from Kathleen who has been kind to him in the past, he steals bread any way so his siblings can eat. In the second excerpt, The Street, there is a conflict between Johnson and the wind. It won't let her read the sign. She doesn't give up trying to focus on the sign until she is able to read it.
