Theme Of Perseverance In A Dog's Life

Humans are all unique creatures with different appearances, mindsets and feelings. But we are all connected by one thing- a drive in life to continue on forward. Everyone’s drive may be different, for example, in A Dog’s Life: The Autobiography of a Stray by Ann M. Martin and A Dog’s Way Home by Bobbie Pyron. Two different books by two different authors, but with the same concept: a drive in life. In A Dog’s Life, the story focuses on a stray dog called Squirrel in her struggle through life. A Dog’s Way Home takes the same idea, but twists it slightly. Tam, a sheltie has to overcome the struggles of Earth trying to get to his end goal home. In A Dog’s Life and A Dog’s Way Home both share the same theme of perseverance, but in slightly different ways. In both A Dog’s Way Home and A Dog’s life the plot focuses on a dog making its way towards a goal. Many obstacles obscure the animal’s way as they keep traveling across the Earth’s tough terrain. Squirrel doesn't have an end goal while Tam does. This means that they are driven by two different forces- survival and going home. “The shed was my home. It was everything I knew. But Bone was leaving. So I ran after him” (Martin 34). This shows the start of Squirrel’s traveling. If her brother, Bone, never left then neither would she. She did not know why she even wanted to follow him, Squirrel just listened to her primal instincts. This is a big difference, but both forces are incredibly powerful. “The blast lifted Tam off the ground and tumbled him backwards. Pain unlike anything he had ever felt shot through his shoulder... ztam ran through the forest as fast as his three legs could take him (Pyron 114).
