Existential theme is the view that humans try to make rational decisions. The man had to make decisions that dealt with life or death. The decisions were how long he should take off his gloves, when he needed to make a fire, and weather or not if he should kill his dog for warmth. All these decisions he had to make were very complicated because every choice leads to his outcome of survival. But sadly his choices didn’t get him far at all. His first mistake was going out alone and secondly where he built his fire. The decisions he made took his life. In The Law of Life the setting is very close to the setting in To Build a Fire it is set in the cold woods but in the Klondike Canadian Territory. In the text it says the tribe must keep moving to survive in order to survive the harsh Klondike conditions. As they are getting closer to leaving they have to abandon Koskoosh but in the terrible Klondike temperatures hypothermia can kill a human within minutes without any source of heat or shelter. The grandfather accepted why he was being left behind because he knows that death is unavoidable because everyone’s life does come to an end. Realism can be very hard for a person to accept because most don’t want to except the outcome. When the time comes they can’t do anything but let wait until it happens. It’s not an easy thing to except but with an open mind anyone can except that death happens to everyone. Nobody on earth is invincible therefor nobody can avoid death. The two stories both have some similarities and differences for an example they both include freezing temperatures and trying to survive from the weather. One of the differences is that the main character from To Build a Fire was foreign from the land but the main character from The Laws of Life was from the area. By the time the characters are about to die they both accept there fate. They both never wanted there outcome to be the end of there lives. The cold can overcome the human body and slowly shut the person and it can lead to their very last
