She knows motherhood comes after marriage and she is pretty content on getting married someday. After hearing the thoughts of a lady who claimed that getting married was too unlady like for her to even consider, Helga first laughs about it but soon comes to a realization. Once she get married she will have to perform the unlady like duties that are assigned to married women. Helga does not have a problem with sex, but her expectations are far from the reality of her situation. After she finds her love and marries him the next day, Helga can finally say that she is happy with where she is in her life. Her newfound love for God has helped her block the annoying things of being married from bothering her, however things take a turn for the worst while Helga gives birth to her fourth child. She had fulfilling plans of getting out of poverty and still remaining somewhat independent while she was married but to no avail. Helga feels like she was cursed with frequent pregnancies and while in labor with baby number four she contemplates her life and realizes that she hates it. She hates that she is still in poverty, she no longer believes in God, and she hates her husband and even fantasies about leaving him.
