To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a story about two young siblings, Jeremy Atticus Finch, or Jem, and Jean Louise Finch who is mostly referred to as Scout and is the narrator of the story. To Kill A Mockingbird takes place in the deep south called Maycomb, Alabama. Jem and Scout are the major characters in the story, however, there are very important minor characters. Calpurnia, Dill, Heck Tate, and Walter Cunningham are all minor characters that have a significant impact. Minor characters are not major characters for a reason, but still have a significant impact on the story because they help contribute to many of the subplots which help develop the story as a whole. One of the most important minor characters is Calpurnia. She was not just the Finches cook she also plays a significant role in the teachings and exposure of Scout and Jem in the story as she was there mother figure. One example of her motherly teachings is in the beginning of the story when Jem invites Walter Cunningham Jr. over for lunch after an altercation between Scout and him. Scout is being very rude to Walter during lunch and Calpurnia is not having it. According to Scout, Calpurnia says, “Hush your mouth! Don’t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house’s yo‘ comp’ny, and don’t you let me catch you remarkin’ on their ways like you was so high and mighty” (25). Calpurnia, Dill, Walter Cunningham, and Heck Tate are few of many minor characters who played a significant role in the story and the creation of the subplots. All of these characters contribute in different ways, from the teachings and exposure to new things for Jem and Scout, to childhood love and innocence, and to the want of goodness for both the society and the people. All of these minor characters help remarkably to establish a better plot and helped develop the story
