Power has the ability to manipulate others and can change their view. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, manipulation is shown in various situations throughout the mental asylum. The doctor is wiping tears off his glasses and looks like he’s actually been laughing and McMurphy is back as bud and full of brass and swagger as ever” (Kesey 107). Another quotation that shows manipulation is when McMurphy explains to the attendants, saying, “Oh - it’s bad group, I admit but it’s planned authorized, legal government-sponsored excursion and we’re entitled to a legal discount just the same as if we was the FBI” (235). McMurphy tries to convince the gas station attendants that they are entitled to a discount since the patients outing is government – sponsored. The attendants realized that they are from the hospital and try to make them buy the more expensive gas. McMurphy is realizing their tricks and manipulates the situation by working it out for the patients good. Lastly, the power given to the gas station attendants creates tension and selfishness towards the patients in the mental asylum. This is causing McMurphy to use manipulation which results in chaos. Authority and Power can make an individual manipulate others. The victims may retaliate which results in chaos. McMurphy shows
