Loneliness Faces All
Throughout John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, he illustrates the journey George and Lennie have throughout a significant part of their lifetime. Throughout the novel, many characters, including George and Lennie, are facing lonesome and they struggle to deal with it the noble way. Furthermore, many of the men are alone because they have no relatives left and they isolate themselves from everyone else around them. Having no relatives and isolating themselves can affect their mental state; and in this novel, it does to a few characters. Steinbeck uses the characters Curley’s wife, Crooks, and Candy to develop the theme that containing loneliness will cause someone’s desperation deepen.
The theme in the novel, loneliness can develope desperation, relates to a few parts of the story that shows how lonesome Curley’s wife is. When Crooks and Lennie were talking, close to the end of the novel, Curley’s wife walks in on their colloquy. Curley’s wife illuminates, “‘Well, I ain’t giving you no trouble. Think I don’t like to talk to somebody ever’ once in a while? Think I like to stick in that house alla time’”(77)? Sometimes Curley won’t let his wife talk to anybody else except for him, almost like he is denouncing her. Also, Crooks is another character that contains loneliness since he is totally cut out from every person around him. Sometimes Candy is just so lonesome and tries to make new friends to not feel like that anymore. Being lonesome has always been around and multiple people suffer from it all around the world.
