What do people experience when they are lonely? They feel depressed, empty, isolated, and useless. Usually, loneliness is caused because of the lack of socialism and friendship. In John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, almost all characters admit to one another that they are extremely lonely and need a comforting friend. But instead, they get judgemental disapproval, or a stranger who is willing to recklessly listen and then later forget. Almost all of the characters feel lonely and isolated because of the characteristics they cannot control.

But later in the novella, the other side of Curley’s wife is exposed, showing her as a lonely, desperate woman seeking for attention. When Curley’s wife walks in the Crook’s room, interrupting Candy’s and Lennie’s future plans discussion, Candy knowing that she is trouble, tells her to go back to her house. Curley's wife exclaims, ‘“Think I don’t like to talk to somebody ever’ once in awhile? Think I like to stick in that house alla time?”’ (77). Curley’s wife is flirting to block out the loneliness that she often gets. She is desperate for attention and just needs someone who would care.

But in the end, they ended up being more lonely than before because others did not like the characteristics that they are not able to control.
