Of Mice and Men and All My Sons are two timeless works of literature that leave lasting effects on the reader. Of Mice and Men was about two companions, George and Lennie, who went to work on a farm together and had a dream of starting their own farm together. All My Sons was about a family struggling to move on from the death of their son, Larry. While they storylines of these literary works vary, they share some common ideas. Joe Keller managed to mostly isolate himself from the outside world. To him, his family and his job were the only things that mattered, and the only outside world was his business. Kate Keller, Joe’s wife, was extremely lonely throughout this play. She misses her son, Larry, who died. She was also isolated due to her belief that Larry was just missing, not dead. Everyone else believed he had died, but she couldn’t let go of him so easily. Ann was also lonely without Larry. She and Larry had been engaged when he died, so before she moved on with Chris, his brother, she was left alone. She had been supposed to have a life with Larry, but before she even got a chance to start one, he died. However, Chris managed to fill the hole Larry had left in her life, and she was no longer so lonely when they got engaged. At the end of the play, Joe Keller killed himself, which most likely left the rest of the Keller family feeling lonely without him. Kate probably felt the most alone since she had just come to terms with the fact that her son was dead and then almost immediately had to come to terms with the fact that her husband was too. Unlike Chris, she didn’t have a significant other to help her through the tough time ahead of them. The setting also contributed to the feeling of isolation in the play.
