After Macbeth murders Duncan, supernatural events start to occur. Macbeth speaks this speech because of the knocking he hears on his gate. This is mysterious and foreshadows the end of the play. The knocking portrays doom that's coming. Symbolically, Macduff is the one who is knocking because he is the one who destroys Macbeth in the end. It also represents the guilt of Macbeth overwhelming him. He says “ all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood” because blood is the symbol for guilt and he feels the amount of blood on his hands will turn the sea red. Lady Macbeth’s response to this is ironic, “A little water clears us of this deed,” Lady Macbeth ends up committing suicide because of the conscious haunting her.
