This is used in the book, to show how the plane flies too close to Jonas’s village, and the siren goes off and he has to go home by himself due to the fact that his parents are at work and his little sister Lily is at the Child-care Centre. His village is very independent and if you don't obey the rules you will be released, not all the time does everyone tell the truth about if they have done something that they shouldn't have. Jonas wonders what goes on in the releasing room and does’t quite understand the fact that there is an outside world, for he is only 11. Jonas is curious to know more about the ‘Outside World’ and would like to see, unfortunately it is against the rules. An example of this, in the book is when Jonas goes to the ‘House of the Old’ and talks to the older lady about how the older people get released and how he wanted to go and watch some of the older people walk through the releasing door. Jonas was curious as to what happens after they go through the door, the older people are so happy to be released and he would like to know more about it. Jonas is curious as to where they get sent and what happens to them, but unfortunately children were not allowed to attend the function.
