Similarities Between Curley's Wife And Crooks

Have you ever felt lonely? How is it that people all around the world can feel isolated even when they are surrounded by others? Isolation may come from the lack of similarity between groups, or from a complete absence of others. In the novel Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck, both Curley’s wife, and Crooks have been isolated from the other workers in the ranch. However, not from the absence of others, but the lack of connection between these people that keeps them apart. The two characters were isolated from the other rancher hands because of their lack of similarity between them. Just like Curley’s wife, Crooks a “negro” in the early 1900’s, has been set-apart from the others because of his skin color. His skin color is something that Crooks can not control; because of it his body is crippled from the continuous beatings he has to endure. Crooks sleeps by himself, separated by others mentally, Crooks tries to act tough. As if he didn’t need anyone else. “ You got no right to come into my room. This here’s my room. Nobody got any right in here but me. ” Crooks said sharply. (Steinbeck 68). This is a great example of Crooks acting though, even though he wanted the company. Crooks isn’t used to a lot of human interactions at the ranch, and doesn’t know how to take it without sounding weak. This quote lionizes to readers that to isolate someone else, such as Lennie in this case, you must experience it first hand.
