Steinbeck created this character to almost be like a guardian to Lennie. George is short, but he’s stubborn. He isn’t stubborn to be rude, he’s like that because he needs to be with Lennie and make him make the right decisions. Since George concerns himself with Lennie so much, he doesn’t have much time for anything else, which makes him isolated. He’s constantly said that if he didn’t have to look out for Lennie, he could have done something with his life. George specifically says this on page 103, “If I was alone I could live so easy.” His voice was monotonous, had no emphasis. “I could get a job an’ not have no mess.” Steinbeck included this because even though he’s said it so many times before, he truly means it. He adds in the word monotonous because he wants to show the reader that George does not show any emotion at this moment, which is for the best because this was seconds before George was forced to shoot Lennie.
