Many people will experience isolation and solitude during their lifetime. Christopher Kezelos’s (2011) ‘Zero’ and Adam Elliot’s (2009) ‘Mary and Max’ portray the difficulties of deliberate seclusion and lonesomeness perceived through the character’s point of view. Kezelos’s work was efficacious as he had successfully portrayed the lack of companionship and love experienced through his protagonist, which were induced by society as he born with the symbolic design representing nothing. This could result in the audience having a sense of understanding and empathy of the distress and anxiety portrayed by the characters, reminding them of their experience of self-worthlessness and rejection.

Some say loneliness is the unhappiness that is often felt when they do not have friends or no one to turn to; some say loneliness is an emotion, but being alone can be a choice. Kazuo Ishiguro cleverly presents this throughout his novel Never Let Me Go. The dominant conflict which the characters face throughout the novel is the yearning to discover oneself and find belonging. Although the main characters, Kathy, Tommy and Ruth accept their inescapable donations and unfortunate deaths, the moments in their lives which are most emotionally traumatic are centred on this lack of belonging. The narrator of the novel, Kathy, realizes that she is different from the people outside of the enclosure, ‘’the moment when you realize that you really are different to them; that there are people out there, like Madame, who don’t hate you or wish you harm, but who nevertheless shudder at the very thought of you…’’. Madame is a woman who comes and visits Hailsham and shows little interest in the students, this conveys that the world outside of Hailsham condemns Kathy’s kind and that she will constantly be fighting a predetermined identity that civilisation has formed for her.…

Introduction: One may not realize that a person is living in isolation, especially if they are seen around people. It is quite a wonder that one can be quite alienated from normal life or people while still living around them. More so, it is surprising how a person could just choose to live indoors because of his phobia and be happy enjoying his own company. In the two works of literature, The Pleasure of my Company by Steve Martin and The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger, this theme has been expressed in different ways. While Martin in his book, The Pleasure of My Company expresses the theme of isolation by developing a protagonist who is confined from the normal social life like other people with his fears, Salinger develops such a character…
