A cynical man named Montresor that seeks revenge from his “friend” Fortunato and successfully murders him brings him the exact opposite of what his name means, fortunate. Poe on the other hand, the author of this story, “The Cask of Amontillado”, was brought good fortune from this tale he made that became popular and got to make good money off of it. This success did not come with just his well thought out plot for the story, but also many other elements, mainly literary elements. Edgar Allan Poe uses foreshadowing and types of irony like dramatic and verbal to progress the story in an entertaining manner.

A main example can be said in the names of characters, like stated earlier, Fortunato, which means fortunate in Italian, isnt really fortunate at all considering how he ends up in the story. Dramatic irony is drama or conflict that the audience or reader of the narrative knows about but the characters that are in it have no idea on what to expect. The implementation of this is seen throughout the whole story from the very beginning as the plot of the entire story, Montresor plans on murdering poor Fortunato by using his very elaborate scheme he keeps repeating during the whole story by sealing him in his catacombs and trapping him by building a wall and Fortunato realises what is going on but when it is too late for him to do anything.
