Find two images in the poem that show the mother’s anguish.
The line “her eyes grew wet and wild” showed how shocked and scared the mother was when she got news of the bombing. Also, the when the mother “clawed through bits of glass and brick, then lifted out a shoe” showed she had not yet accepted that her daughter was dead. She frantically search through the rubble for her missing child hoping she would find her.
"The Workbox" The poem on its surface is a story of a husband presenting his wife with a gift that is not too appreciated. This poem can be read on different levels and yield different types of irony.

The husband was not trying to please his wife when he gave her the workbox. In the poem the reader sees verbal irony and sarcasm. Verbal irony is a statement in which the speaker says the opposite of what they really want to say. Though the wife is startled to find out the origin of the box and of John Wayward’s death, she denied the origin of the box troubled her and knowing John. Sarcasm is a conspicuously bitter form of irony in which the ironic statement is designed to hurt/mock its target. The speaker seemed to take pleasure in giving his wife details about the box and speaking about John’s death.
"The Ruined Maid" is another Thomas Hardy poem about a young girl coming to the city and running into another young woman, Amelia, who left their small town a while ago and is now living, seemingly prosperously, in the city. Be sure to consider what the word "ruined" means.
6. How is Amelia (‘melia) different from when she lived in the country?
Amelia dresses different than she did when she lived in the country now she wears fine garments sweeping dresses, gloves, feathers and jewellery. Amelia also speaks differently. She speaks more refined as if she was of the upper class gentry. She even looked prettier as the speaker commented that she was bewitch by Amelia’s cheek. Amelia’s attitude also changed.
