In Macbeth, William Shakespeare uses irony to create an internal war within Macbeth, conveying that treachery is a far greater crime upon oneself than to the person that was betrayed. The war in Macbeth began when Duncan fired the first shot, saying to his beloved subject, “I have begun to plant thee and will labor / To make thee full of growing” (1, 4, 33-34). However, it is not the seeds of loyalty and a career of being the Thane of Cawdor that is being planted, but ironically, the seeds of betrayal.
