Furthermore, the death of Simon affects the boys who have not converted to savagery. Simon is originally one of the choir members. The choir members are chosen to be hunters that are led by Jack, but Simon does not do much hunting within the novel. From the beginning of the novel the boys have to deal with what the younger boys call ‘the beastie’. The beastie is something that comes up at one of the meetings that are held by Ralph. One of the younger boys who is only known as ‘mulberry boy’ says that he has seen a beastie while on the island. The older boys do not think much of it they just laugh it off saying that it does not exist. Eventually, they notice that the young boys still believe that it is real and Jack says that they do not have to worry because the hunters are going to kill it. The beastie gets mentioned many times throughout the novel, but the hunters do not believe in it until they think they think they see it on a mountain. Getting caught up in the game the boys think that Simon is the beast and kill him while chanting “‘Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in!’” (Golding 168). Quickly after Ralph’s tribe leaves without a word. Back at the safety of their camp Ralph allows himself to think about what happened only minutes ago. The killing of Simon gets Ralph thinking about how most of the boys have converted to savagery. Ralph finally sees how much all of the boys have changed. How the island has changed them. Piggy tries to comfort him, but it does not do much. After this the two tribes are even more on edge. Jack’s tribe steals Piggy’s specs and when they go to get them back Roger kills Piggy. Ralph “heard the rock before he saw it [...] the rock struck Piggy [...] Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back” (Golding 200-201). This essentially breaks Ralph. Without Piggy being there to help guide him on the right path Ralph converts to using primal instincts.
