I respectfully acknowledge the Elders and custodians of the Yuin nation, past and present, their descendants and kin of the land where I am living, studying and working. This is a warning that this journal may contain images, voices and names of deceased Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island people. Whilst attending school with two Aboriginal students in my class, I was never exposed to people stereotyping Aboriginal people.…
In 1835, John Batman was sponsored by a group of businessmen in Tasmania to travel to what we now know as the state of Victoria in order to find usable land for sheep farming. John arrived in Port Phillip Bay and found that the land in Melbourne was perfect. He then met with Aboriginal elders (as seen in source 1) and negotiated a settlement treaty which he traded 234,000 hectares of Victorian land for an annual payment of goods and protection services. This treaty benefited the Europeans more than it benefited the Aboriginals but both Source 1: Batman's treaty with the aborigines at Merri Creek, 6th June 1835, John Wesley Burtt, communities were impacted positively and negatively by this event. John Batman’s treaty undoubtedly benefited…
In this article, the author, Pamela Palmater, makes several arguments and some conclusions. Even her conclusions appear to contain smaller arguments. Either way, all the arguments center on one issue: crisis-level in Canada for violence against Indigenous women and girls. Palmater’s central argument is for an in-depth inquiry into the violence. She argues the inquiry must be both focused and general.…
INTRODUCTION Even though World War II is seen, from an American perspective, as a heroic war in which the United States fought against fascism and for freedom and equality, the race relations in the United States did not reflect these noble goals. In this essay I aim to deconstruct the ways in which race relations in the United States perpetuated systemic racism and the unequal power systems that had been in place for many years. To discuss these points I specifically highlight the cases of Japanese Internment, Native American relations, and Jewish American relations with the United States government.…
Blog: Critical Reflection During the time of the European invasion of Australia, many of the events that occurred have left a lasting impact on the Indigenous people in Australia and have made me feel quite astounded as to how a group of people could treat anyone in that manner (Axelsson et al. 2016, pp. 1-7). It is extremely important in our nursing practice to be able to examine and understand what has happened in the past and critically reason how this information can help us improve on our own nursing practice and improve healthcare for Aboriginal people (Axelsson et al. 2016 pp. 1-7).…
Aborigines are particularly disadvantaged in our society. The problems and difficulties that they face when using the legal system are part of the reason for them being overrepresented in the criminal justice system. There are many issues which result in this participation; these include the presence of language barriers between an officer and an aboriginal suspect, cultural taboos aboriginal suspects suffer, their body language which tends to raise suspicion and their lack of understanding of the questioning procedure. These issues will be discussed to examine the topic at hand and suggested reforms will also be given to eliminate these complications to ensure that they receive a fair and unbiased hearing. Language barriers are the most common…
The Indigenous peoples of Canada have been mistreated for years, yet only recently has our government began to rebuild this important and valuable relationship. Canadians are generally known for their welcoming attitudes and openness towards others, however this view has constantly been tested since the beginning of the twentieth century. The largest problem facing Canadians as a nation is the constant mistreatment and discrimination shown towards the Indigenous Peoples, who are the descendants of the original inhabitants of this land. This is such an important issue because we are taking away the fundamental rights of these people.…
Indigenous Australians (Aboriginals) have been in Australia for what scientists believe over 45,000 years, well before white people came to Australia. Even though the aboriginals had been here a long time, it was only in 1967 that they had been included in the national census, and that constitutional discrimination The oldest person found in Australia Mungo Man, was found in Lake Mungo National Park, it is believed that the skeleton is over 42,000 years old.…
Based off the history of indigenous peoples in Canada, one thing is for certain; discriminatory and inhumane acts by European conquest, towards a unique culture has altered the Aboriginal way of life we see in Canada today. While the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), has been evolving and developing for multiple years, these 94 recommendations give important insight and suggestions in how the nation of Canada can move away from this unjust history, reconcile and work towards becoming a stronger nation. While it may seem that reparations are impractical from the devastations of such events as the Indian residential schools, the TRC has been a timely process with the intent to restore an altered Aboriginal life and strengthen ties with…
The aboriginal civil rights movement is a triumph of the human spirit. The aboriginal civil rights movement is a triumph of the human spirit, though it has its shortcomings. The aboriginal civil rights movement achieved many things politically and socially with the help of significant people and there are some things we are yet to achieve.…
The novel explores an adolescent boy’s journey on acceptance and the realities of racism. Within this narrative, the Indigenous people and the White Australians are segregated. This triggered tension between the groups, leading to disastrous incidences. One of the future inspected occasions dealt with stereotyping. The Native people of Australia were dreaded.…
There are many groups of Aboriginal people in Sydney and Marrickville Region, one of them is the Cadigal Wangal clans from the Eora Nation. The Cadigal group is located in Petersham and near to the Cooks River, while the Wangal are located near to the Parramatta River in Parramatta. A brief of the big days in Aboriginal traditions was back in 2007 when the NAIDOC (National Aborigines Day Observance Committee) week had the 50 years celebration and the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum.…
The overrepresentation of indigenous people is a substantial issue in our country that requires attention in order to maintain a positive relationship with the Aboriginals and remove any negative stigmatization against the indigenous culture (Welsh & Ogloff, 2008, pp. 492-494). This remains an issue in our society because there are increasing numbers of indigenous people in prison throughout the provinces due to systemic racism within the legal system, crimes committed due to socioeconomic challenges and cultural or language barriers (Fitzgerald & Carrington, 2008, pp. 524-525). Moreover, alternative courses of action should be addressed in order to decrease the overrepresentation of indigenous people in the criminal justice system.…
Many Canadian citizens pride themselves on the multiculturalism, diversity, and equality their country thrives on. Since 1980, citizens as young as kindergarteners have been taught to sing of Canada’s home and native land in the national anthem, promoting the freedom and strength of their sovereign country. But, there is a lack of celebration for Indigenous peoples, and their distinct role in creating Canada. There is little recognition that the brutal colonization of Indigenous peoples, dispossession of their vast amounts of native land, and rationalization of racism in order to assimilate them into acceptable cultural norms, greatly influenced Canadians ability to proudly sing about the glory of their country. If there is no room in our national…
