Nature And Individuality In 'Waving Through A Window'

The concepts of the importance of nature and individuality are heavily depicted throughout Into The Wild and throughout all genres of music. There are five songs from different song that represent Chris and express the notions of nature and individuality in different verses of the songs. These five songs are “Waving Through A Window”, “Birds”, “I Don't Know My Name”, “What A Wonderful World”, and “Follow Your Arrow”. All hold some meaning to events in the book or to the themes of the book.
The song “Waving Through A Window” is from the Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen, and signifies being different from others and not feeling that you can be heard. This relates to the book because Chris doesn't feel that what he thinks is being taken into …show more content…
One specific verse talks about weather, the outdoors, and nature during during different time frames. It goes like this: “I think to myself what a wonderful world
I see skies of blue and clouds of white, the bright blessed day, the dark sacred night, and I think to myself what a wonderful world. The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky.” This relates to Chris because he became enraptured with the beauty of nature and wanted others to see it as well. “If you save yourself for marriage, you're a bore, if you don't save yourself for marriage, you're a horrible person. If you won't have a drink, then you're a prude, but they'll call you a drunk as soon as you down the first one.” This verse is talking about society’s and religion’s views of people being contradictory. This concept angered Chris even though he judged people as well. “If you can't lose the weight, then you're just fat, but if you lose too much then you're on crack. You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't, so you might as well just do whatever you want.” The main point of this verse is that you are going to be judged no matter what you do so you shouldn't dwell on it. This is what Chris realized during his college career by people watching, in the sketchy parts of his town, and in his schools. “Make lots of noise, kiss lots of boys, or kiss lots of girls if that's something you're into. When the straight and narrow gets a little too straight, roll up the joint, or don't. Just follow your arrow wherever it points, yeah, follow your arrow wherever it points.” The concept of the chorus is for people to do what they want without fear of judgement and just follow what you believe is correct for yourself and do it. This also states between the lines that you shouldn't try to judge people on
