Gwen Bristow utilizes imagery to link the reader with how Celia feels towards Jimmy causing it to become impossible for the reader to not practically love Jimmy as well. “Jimmy put an arm her and pulled her to him and kissed her again, and there was nothing quick or light about this one. In her amazement the bleak little hallway spun around her with the colors of paradise.” (Bristow 75) Bristow provides a clear image in the reader's mind causing the reader to connect with Celia. Jimmy is showing Celia how much he loves her and she experiences what it is like to not be alone anymore, and this excites her. Bristow however, expresses that everything good must come to an end. Celia drowns in love with Jimmy throughout the course of the novel and she patiently waits until the day comes that she can be of age to marry him in April. Although Celia is soon faced with the shocking news that Jimmy is dead, and the Tories are to blame. She heard the news after she finally arrived in Bellwood, where she would have lived happily ever after with her love, Jimmy. Big Buck, a friend, is the only one to survive the horrific attack. He explains what had happened, “I just run. I ain’t lookin’ to see where I'm goin’.... And then I see Miss Beatrice, comin’ to meet me…. Miss Beatrice can’t hardly talk, but she wants to talk. She say the man that shot Mr. Jimmy killed him right there”(Bristow ). …show more content…
She has the constant thought running through her mind that she or another one of her loved ones will get killed by the disgusting war. Every gunshot ringing in Celia’s ears could be the result of her friends and family being shot. Fear influences her thoughts day after day. Celia and her maid, Marietta, stay in the cellar of Vivian’s house due to the gunshots and fireballs that could strike the house at any moment and kill either one of them. “Celia felt herself tremble as she thought, ‘If I had been standing there instead of here, I would be dead’” (Bristow ). Bristow has a way of making the reader feel terrified for the characters. The reader feels the fear through the characters thoughts and how they express what they say. Celia becomes irritated due to the fear and loss that the war has caused which leads her anger to build up and she is ready to

In addition, in all three stories the authors give examples and comparisons of symbolism between the objects and the characters. The story of Ivanovich Poprishchin in ‘A Diary of a Madman’ progresses in a similar manner, as the anxious and socially withdrawn Russian titular councilor experiences the fast downfall of his sanity. I will focus on analyzing the characterization of the protagonists and how their development affects the narration.…

While thinking of subjects, Woolf came to accept two needs that women did not have; therefore, stopped them from writing excellent literature.
