The motif of hypocrisy is prevalent throughout “The Great Gatsby” especially among the upper class of characters. An excellent example of this is Tom. In the book, Tom looks down on Gatsby for being a bootlegger, while he himself drinks illegal alcohol in addition he mentions how girls “run around too much” when he himself is having an affair. It goes to show some of the hypocrisy that surrounds the upper class, and supports the theme of social status and moral character going hand-in-hand.
