In this scene, Macduff has left England, leaving Lady Macduff afraid and concerned. Lady Macbeth seems unsure if Macduff leaving England was a wise decision. In this scene Macbeth displays hubris because he appears to be cocky and disregards the threats. He is completely oblivious about the threats of Malcolm and the ten thousand soldiers. ‘Bring me no more report. Let them fly all. Till Birnam Wood remove to Dunisinane I cannot taint with fear. What’s the boy Malcolm? Was he not born of woman?’ ‘The mind I saw by and the heart I bear shall never sag with doubt nor shake with fear.’ ‘Go, prick thy face and over- red thy fear, thou lily- livered boy.What soldiers, patch? Eventually the lords come up with a plan, ‘Let every soldier hew him down a bough and bear’t before him. Thereby shall we shadow the numbers of our host and make discovery err report of us.’ In the previous scene Macbeth says, ‘Till Birnam Wood remove to Dunsinane I cannot taint with fear.’ This means that the soldiers will disguise themselves as wood and it will be a surprise. Macbeth doesn’t fear the army, unless Birman Wood moves to Dunsinane. However, this is exactly what Malcolm plans. This is an example of dramatic irony because the two phrases contradict each other. It also shows that Macbeth is in danger of being killed. Also the audience knows what Macbeth fears, where as Malcolm doesn’t.
