Hero's Journey (TKAM and F451)
The Call
The call is an event which "calls" the character into action or adventure. It is the start of the characters journey/adventure.
Atticus' call
The call in To Kill a Mockingbird was when Atticus was called or requested by the state to take on Tom Robinson's rape case. This called Atticus to one of the biggest court cases that Maycomb county has ever seen.
Guy's call
Guy's call wasn't a literal call like Atticus, but instead his call was meeting Clarisse, the overly curious girl who was his new neighbor at the time but mysteriously "died" in a car accident.
The threshold
After being called to adventure, the character (hero) must pass through a threshold which is the door between the known and unknown. Before

In the abyss, the character must face their biggest fear by themselves.
Atticus' abyss
Atticus' abyss starts with the whole Finch family (minus Calpurnia) walking home. This takes place a little time after the trial. While walking home, Bob Ewell comes out and attacks them. Although "defeating" Ewell wasn't at all Atticus, it was still considered his abyss. Boo Radley came out of his house fighting his fear and fights Ewell to the death (Ewell's death that is) and spares the children's lives and Atticus' as well.
Guy's abyss
The abyss in Fahrenheit 451 is when Guy starts to quote books that he has been reading in front of his wife and some of his wife's friends. Eventually I believe people started to find out through Mildred, word spread to Beatty and Beatty ordered him to burn down his own house. Thus infuriating Guy, causing him to kill Beatty by coating him with kerosene.
The transformation
At this point the character has conquered his or her fear and defeated the abyss. This is when an old part of him or her dies as a new part is being born.
Atticus'

Guy's atonement
He accepts that he must live his new life with other people other than the people he had become close with and maybe known almost his whole life. This follows the revelation of the death of his old life which he now accepts and starts to continue his new life.
The return
The return is the final stage of the characters adventure. This is where the character "returns" with is new found self and comes back through the threshold back to his known world.
Atticus' return
Atticus returns to his home even though he only hypothetically left. He continues to go and defend other African Americans that need his help in trials. The Finch's then become close with Boo Radley. Scout and Jem have matured greatly and learned what it means to be a mindful and kind person.
Guy's return
Guy doesn't physically return to his home but is introduced to his new and improved home outside of his now obliterated city. He learns the new customs and shares his knowledge about the city right before it was

The last step of the hero's journey is the Return. The Return is when the hero is able to come back to the old world with his accomplishments. In order for the hero to fulfill their destiny and become the leader they need to return to their old world. An example of a refusal is when Jack fights against the cops and refuses to turn himself in and go to jail.…

Chapter 1 Page #5 “There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb County. But it was a time of vague optimism for some of the people: Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself.” After researching the Great Depression, I discovered that the quote, “We have nothing to fear, but fear itself” is the most famous phrase from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s first inaugural speech. FDR gave his inaugural speech after his election in 1932. From this, we can conclude that the story began in 1933.…

”’(Lee 110) Atticus became a victim of racism. Because Atticus was defending a black man, his own family discriminated him, saying he tarnished their family name, the reason being that, although Atticus was not black, he was a social taboo. He associated himself with a black person which was a horrible thing to do during the time, because of racist and prejudice assumptions about black people. This is further evident when Jem and Mrs. Dubose had a conflict between them, as Scout describes ’Jem said softly “She [Mrs. Dubose] said you [Atticus] lawed for niggers and trash.”’…

After viewing the short film “Our time is up” by Rob Pearlstein, I was able to place the five components of the plot structure diagram as presented in theatre class. The five plot structure is, exposition, inciting event, raising event, climax, and falling action. The exposition is the beginning of the plot, it sets the foundational background of the main character or the story. At the opening of the story, you see a time clock set, an immaculate environment where everything is not just clean but ordered.…

Atticus perseveres through his problems and acts upon his role in society, to do what is right. He explains to Scout that “Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win…” (76) Atticus is a remarkable man because he defends Tom Robinson in the case even though he knows that in society at the time, when it’s a black man’s word against a white man’s, the white man always wins. He represents a light in a time of darkness because even when most people neglect to defend what is morally correct, he fights for the Negro citizens and tolerates the insults and shame he continually faces. When Scout talks about a book that Atticus read to her, she tells him about a misunderstood character who “was real nice” and didn’t do anything wrong even if people thought he did and Atticus tell her that “Most people are…when you finally see them.” (281) Atticus refers to Boo Radley because while he knew about Boo and respected him staying in the house all the time, most people assumed the worst and let their ignorance interfere with the truth.…
