Throughout the first portion of the novel, we have come to know Tuyen’s and Carla’s desire to detach themselves from the hustle and bustle of Toronto’s working society. They wish for lives that aren’t regulated by schedules and where they can be or do whatever makes them happy. Many view retirement as a clear-cut example of this sort of lifestyle, but there are still countless ways to feel satisfaction (with employments) that are gratifying and push individuals to contribute to the world in a meaningful way. Personally, I long for a future that isn’t mandated or restricted by deadlines, time and money. I believe that true happiness can come in many forms whether rich or poor.
