Romeo and Juliet is all about their forbidden love. In Hamlet he falls in love with Ophelia who he is told not to be with. In a way both of these plays have a forbidden love. They also have love of their families. Juliet loves her Father enough to consent to a marriage even though she doesn’t go through with it. Hamlet loves his father the King so much that he swears revenge on his Uncle and won’t stop until he gets it. In Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet another huge major related theme would be betrayal. Romeo and Juliet fall in love even though they are supposed to be sworn enemies. Their families have hated each other for many, many years. Even though they have found love they have betrayed their families by even meeting and seeing the other. In Hamlet the widowed Queen Gertrude marries Hamlet’s Uncle Claudius. This is the biggest betrayal a woman could do especially right after the death and funeral of her husband. Another betrayal would be when Romeo killed Juliet’s cousin Tybalt. She loved her cousin and was upset when he was killed, but she was more upset it lead up to Romeo’s banishment. What is a tragedy without death? In Romeo and Juliet many characters die. These characters include: Romeo, Juliet, Paris, Tybalt, Mercutio, and Lady Montague. These characters died in different ways though. Romeo and Juliet died by suicide. Paris was killed in a sword fight by Romeo when he goes to visit her “grave.” Mercutio is killed by Tybalt in a fight. Tybalt is also killed by Romeo in a fight for revenge from him killing Mercutio. Last, but not least Lady Montague was not technically killed. She did die, but by a heart attack from hearing horrible news about her son.
