Theme Of Grief In Drums Girls And Dangerous Pie

Often we judge people by the face that they put on when they are around other people. Steven, the protagonist from Drums Girls and Dangerous Pie puts on a makeshift happy face when he is out but really is going through a lot of pain. In Drums Girls and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick. Steven goes through the five stages of grief denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance to help him cope with Jeffrey, Stevens little brother´s illness. As a result of Jeffreys illness, Steven shows signs of the five stages of grief throughout the book. Here are some examples to prove Steven goes through the five stages of grief.

My first example is when Steven gets mad that he has to do so much work at school to make up the work that he did not do. He said ¨Why are you making me do so much work when my brother's white cell count is so low¨ (Sonnenblick 132). This shows Steven is frustrated and angry, Steven just wants to be there for Jeffrey Steven does not want to be doing work while his brother has cancer and could possibly die. He feels mad that teachers would give him so much work when he is work while he is going through a family crisis. The next example Steven shows is when he says that he wanted to punch anyone who said they understood his pain. Steven said,¨Nobody understood my pain. Maybe if I had gone to each of their houses whacking random family members with a nail-studded two by four they would have begun to have basic comprehension¨ (Sonnenblick 133). This shows anger because Steven said he wanted to punch every kid who said that. Just because someone was trying to be nice about his brother. This shows a lot of anger because he is taking people who are trying to be nice, and saying he wants to punch them. Just because they said that they understand his …show more content…
Steven shows acceptance when Mrs. Galley leaves a voicemail for him over the phone after he had to leave because Jeffrey had a fever. She tells him he has accepted his own path and she is proud of him. This shows acceptance because Steven finally realized he can not change that Jeffrey has cancer but he can be there for Jeffrey every step of the way. Another example of Steven showing acceptance is when Steven reflects on his high school year and realizes Jeffrey is not so annoying and he would have a worse life without Jeffrey.
