These are a select few adults of the community who control the others. The elders in this movie condition people from a young age to be scared of the woods. They scare them into thinking there are monsters in the woods that will kill them. They are also taught to be afraid of the color red, because this is “the bad color,” and it is associated with the monsters; or as the characters refer to them “those we do not speak of.”. In The Village the elders don’t distribute drugs, but they do lie to scare the people in the community. They convince the whole community into believing the woods are full of evil monsters to keep them out. They want them out of the woods, so they don’t reach the towns, they might want to leave their land once they reach the towns.
