8 December 2016 Frankenstein: A Gothic Novel Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is a novel set in 18th century Europe, mainly Geneva, Ingolstadt, England, Scotland and the northern ice areas (Shelley). It is a frightening story of creation and destruction. Death and loneliness are prominent themes throughout the novel. Several elements of a gothic novel are present in the story. Although it takes a while for Victor to begin working on this female monster, he ultimately decides he cannot complete her for he realizes is could create so many more problems and he destroys the female companion. This enrages the monster, as he now knows he will be forever alone and vows revenge on Victor on wedding night to his love, Elizabeth. Before the wedding takes place, the monster murders Victor’s friend, Henry, and at first Victor is held responsible for his murder, although ultimately, he was set free for lack of evidence. Victor then marries Elizabeth, but knows that the monster is coming for him that night. It is not a fight with Victor though that the creature intended, but to murder Elizabeth. The tragic news of Elizabeth’s death causes Victor’s father to die a few days later. Victor has now lost everyone that he cared about and tracks the monster with the intentions of killing him, never revealing that he was the one who created him to anyone. Although, after a struggle with the monster, he is near death and is rescued by an explorer, named Walton. Walton listens to Victor’s story and documents it in letters to his sister. As Victor shares his story with Walton, he begins with his upbringing and family life, which sounds idyllic, but hints that his life did not continue this way. Victor’s adult life was filled with fear of the monster he created and of it being discovered. He fell ill after each stressful events and was constantly isolating himself as he found is difficult to find happiness after creating the monster. He suffered through deaths of his love ones at the hand of the monster, yet he was equally to blame for their deaths as he created the monster physically and destroyed him mentally by abandoning him. In the end, he was as alone as the
