Theme Of Gallantry In To Kill A Mockingbird

Showing the potential of gallantry were Atticus and Skeeter, both white members of society that voiced what they felt was correct. The two payed the price of their outburst from the harsh judgement that was put on them by their fellow friends and family for supporting the blacks. Atticus carried out his belief of equality between both races, by defending Tom Robinson, a black field worker convicted of raping a white girl by the name of Mayella Ewell. His decision of supporting a black man raised many questions by his community that lead to ill words being exchanged about him. Many of the townsfolk in Maycomb County insulted Atticus in front of his children, Jem and Scout. Atticus was even attacked by his own family, and called upon his bad decision to defend Tom. His own nephew, Francis expressed his opinion on Atticus when he told Scout, “He’s nothin‘ but a nigger-lover!”(Lee.) Atticus was pushed down and pressured to give up the case, by the amount of negativity he was getting, but he pushed through it and in the end overcome the haters. Along his journey of helping the blacks, he might have lost many close bonds with his affiliations but he new friends and their love from the blacks. The black community were grateful to Atticus for supporting their friend, Tom and in return they showered their gratitude on him. ‘“Tom Robinson’s daddy sent you along this chicken this morning. … hunks of salt pork, tomatoes, beans, even scuppernongs….. “They—they ’preciate what you did, Mr. Finch.’”(Lee.)
