These men were expected to run the household and provide all the income meanwhile maintaining their public appearance and running the family strictly. However, these men wouldn’t do all the work as the woman would stay home and make sure everything was done while also giving the man of the house a list of the things either she or the household needed in order to contribute to the American Standard of Living where consumerism was overrunning everything. Even though the majority of the things that were listed by the wife were luxury items, or irrelevant to what the house-hold needed, the husband would still go out and buy it as spending money was the American thing to do. Now Rebel Without a Cause is a film that defied the current American Standards by opposing everything and making the children rebels or outlaws towards the American Law. It portrayed how a lack of father figure, or family, could damage a teenager into acting out and doing what he liked. Also showed how lack of authority within the household would result in a rebellion from the children. It also showcased the lack of authority the adults had as they couldn’t control what the kids would do or how they would react in certain situations. In the end, the film was the complete opposite of what the traditional white family should look like and it was controversial towards whether Americans could actually foreign nations when they couldn’t even control their youth at
