In John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, there is one friendship that stands out throughout the novel. George Milton and Lennie Small display a picture of what friendship looks like to everyone they come across throughout the story. Their friendship has strengths and weaknesses. It also came at a cost to each of them while being friendless came at a different cost. George and Lennie show the readers that friendship is costly and can cause hurt but is worth it. George and Lennie became friends when Lennie's Aunt Clara died. George promised her that he would look out for Lennie. George always looked out for Lennie and stayed with him. This often cost him. George Milton counted the cost of friendship and he counted friendship worth all that it cost him. George and Lennie's friendship cost George everything he had. It cost him his money, his time, his resources, and as he would say it cost him his peace. Though George spent all that he had on Lennie, he accounts as a much richer character than any other character in Of Mice and Men. Every other character possessed nothing close to what George had. George had a friend, a companion, a brother. Everyone else lacked a friend, a company, and a brother. They were caught up in themselves and couldn't see the beauty that lies beneath the light hardships. For example, Carlson did not possess a single understanding of what it meant to care for something. He owned a Luger and could kill a dog and maybe even a person and not think twice.
