Many may say that Lennie was just George’s responsibility, but the truth is that Lennie meant everything to George and George meant everything to Lennie. Steinbeck explains to the reader that George and Lennie have been through everything together and describes how George would never leave Lennie. Because Lennie can not take care of himself, George tends to get frustrated and sometimes even considers leaving Lennie, but in reality George only gets angry because he cared so much about Lennie. In one scene of the book, George and Lennie are camping out in the woods the night before they start work. George tells Lennie that they are going to have beans for dinner and Lennie of course asks George for ketchup. When George told Lennie that they don’t have ketchup, Lennie told him that even if they did he would let George have it anyway. “ ‘But I wouldn’t eat none, George. I’d leave it all for you. You could cover your beans with it and I wouldn’t touch none of it.’ ” (Steinbeck 12). This quote proves how much Lennie cares for George. All throughout the book Gene and Finny are not only there for eachother, but they encourage each other to be better. For instance, Gene was not very adventurous, but Finny exposed him to a new lifestyle by jumping out of the tree. Another instance is when Finny is failing school and Gene encourages him to do better by helping him study. Only a true friend cares as much as Gene and Finny to help one another become a better person. Although Finny and Gene argue throughout the book, they are constantly there for each other and constantly posing caring actions onto one another. One scene in the novel starts off with Gene and Finny at the beach after they disobeyed the rules and left campus. Gene had a big test the next morning, but Finny suggested that he should relax and spend a fun day with Finny. That night, Finny explained to Gene that it’s only a good time when you are on a vacation with your best friend. “I know I kind of dragged you away at the point of a gun, but after all you can’t come to the shore with just anybody and you can’t come by yourself, and at this teen-age period in life the proper person is your best pla.’ ” This quote proves that Finny truly believes that Gene is his best friend.
