Freedom from Greed Throughout the novel Seize the Storm by Michael Cadnum, the characters in the story display many different examples of freedom. In addition, he also shows how the characters change their outlooks on the different freedoms they have and use without being aware of it. Many of the antagonists use the different freedoms and privileges they have to increase the amount of crimes they commit and the efficiency at which they do them as well. When Martin and Axel find the money and Leonard finds out, his first intention is to keep the it. In addition, despite other crew member trying to keep it for themselves, or destroying it altogether, he tries to split it amongst them equally. He has every right to do so, it’s in his nature to want to be as selfish as Elwood and keep the money all to himself, but he decides to split equally amongst them all. However, he relinquishes the money to Elwood to help further his life line. Leonard also shares some characteristics with Martin even if they are more implied than verbally written in the novel. Leonard had cheated on his wife throughout his life. His wife assumes he has and to her knowledge he had previously. Although it was his right to do as he pleased regardless of marriage, it’s not a justifiable act to commit, especially if you are bound to another. It can be implied that while Martin left his home on land to escape a tragic incident, that Leonard also left his home to escape things he regrets doing. Furthermore, anytime that someone were to bring up him cheating on his wife, he’d quickly brush off the conversation and immediately change the topic. As seen throughout the novel, many of the characters all have a set amount of freedoms, some of which are taken from them, and some of which are given. Some of the characters use the freedoms they have to escape situations that haunt them, while others use them to hurt others and make personal, selfish gains for themselves. Overall, the author shows us that one of the many things the characters demonstrated throughout led to their ultimate demise, and that those who overcame this came out stronger than they
