In the text, a piece of evidence that helps to show their freedom is, “Although they came from very different backgrounds, the regime that ruled them had tried to make their personal identities and histories irrelevant. They were never free of the regime’s definition of them as Muslim women.” The quote from the book is significant because it tells the reader that as long as these women are Muslim, they will never be free to make their own decisions. This sentence also shows that Muslim women don’t get any freedom of their own and have to base their lives off of the regime. The second quote of freedom is,” Is she angry that women of her mother’s generation could walk the streets freely, enjoy the opposite sex, join the police force, become pilots, live under laws that were among the most progressive in the world regarding women?” The freedom of Muslim women was very different from now because back then they could do whatever they wanted, but now they must follow the regime or else they will be tortured. The author is asking this question because she wants to know how these women feel to know that the women during their mother’s generation was very

“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” Up to this day, Marthin Luther King still plays a signigicant role in equality between different races. When he was imprisoned in a Birmingham jail for no apparent reason in 1963, eight white Alabama clergymen wrote a letter to African-Americans and urged them to stop protesting in the streets. A few days later King responded by writing “A Letter From a Birmingham Jail” claiming that African-Americans will never receive the rights they deserve if they stop protesting. King wonderfully used the three rhetorical appeals to help get his point across to his audience.…

Freedom means many different things to countless different people. To Frederick Douglass freedom was nothing but a dream for the first twenty-one years of his life. He eventually became ‘free’, but it was a very contrasting type of freedom he had, compared to that of what we today would define it as. During this similar time period a woman suffragist, Elizabeth Cady Stanton had her own unique definition of freedom as well. She lacked the rights of men, and fought to change this.…

“Censorship is the tool of those who have the need to hide actualities from themselves and others. Their fear is only their inability to face what is real. Somewhere in their upbringing they were shielded against the total facts of our experience. They were only taught to look one way when many ways exist.” Charles Bukowski, an American author, unintentionally explains perfectly the customs of the people, influenced by the government, in relation to Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury; he does this by explaining the habits of people who are naive and intellectually vacuous.…

Censorship is about deciding on what people can and cannot see within a society chosen by a select group. Censorship is at the heart of the dystopian world of Fahrenheit 451; firemen start the fires rather than extinguishing them. The firemen in this novel are the ones who enforce censorship by burning down any houses if books are known to be present inside. The firemen burn books because of the endless amount of power and knowledge displayed in these novels, which is feared by the government. It is believed that by burning books it therefore removes any possible threats towards the government.…

Freedom is a sense or feeling when you decide or do something without restriction, it would not be being enslaved or imprisoned. We might think that freedom is innately and probably neglect the importance in our life. However, among the reading we read in this semester, they teach me that some people fight for the freedom and I should treasure the thing we have at this moment. I am most interested in “Narrative of The Life” written by Frederick Douglass and “From A Room of One’s Own” written by Virginia Woolf. Both influence me to have a deeper understanding of slaves in America and the women’s status in the past.…

What would life be like if everything was censored? First we must know what censorship is because it plays a very important role in both the novel Fahrenheit 451 and the film Pleasantville. Censorship is the practice of officially examining books, and what is viewed either on television and so on, but when examining these a higher power is suppressing the unacceptable parts. With that being said in both the novel and film we see the censorship over literature and television shows being run by that society’s government. Since Fahrenheit 451 and Pleasantville have both books and television censored we find that it is more valuable when our protagonists who once loved their part in their new society, in fact turn against their old ways and spark a rebellion to preserve what is considered outlawed.…

Before discussing the topic of freedom, we must ask ourselves: Are we really free? From early decades, the concept of freedom goes hand in hand with reaching success. Many Americans work restlessly to transform their dreams into realities. However, the evident disappointment and the lack of progress allude to the fact that, in the end, it all depends on the opportunities one is given. Langston Hughes makes this concept one of the main themes behind his literary works, especially in the poems Let America Be America Again and Dreams Deferred.…
