Tangerine is Tangerine is a book about Paul Fisher who moves from Houston, Texas to Lake Windsor Downs in Tangerine, Florida. Paul makes many new friends and makes the soccer team. Paul is partially blind and doesn’t remember what happened to his eyes. Paul’s parents mostly pay attention to their all star hero kicker son, Erik, who in reality is Paul’s fearful nightmare. Throughout the book, Paul gets many flashbacks that help him remember what happened to his eyes, and learns a dark secret the family kept from him. In the novel Tangerine, Edward Bloor, the author, uses exceptional use of flashback and motif to convey the theme of fear and conquering it. For example, on page 3 Paul gets a flashback about a black metal box. “The man in the ski mask leaned further out at the window. He pulled the bat back and up. Then he brought it forward in a mighty swing, right at my head… I burst through the front door, crying hysterically...It was ‘Erik.’ I was saying ‘Erik.’” The meaning of this evidence is that Paul fears his brother, Erik. He’s afraid of him so much, that he thought Erik was going to murder him. The flashback tells us that Paul doesn’t like his brother and fears him. Another example can be seen on page 168 in Paul’s backyard in Huntsville. “Suddenly I felt the hot breath of a predator on my neck. I screamed in terror. Erik laughed and ran over to Mom and Dad… I remembered that I started to cry, in the middle of that pretend clock, but Mom and Dad did not notice… And I could see
