Theme Of Fate In The Hobbit

William Wordsworth once said, “Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart. All authors follow this; they pour their sorrows, happiness and everything in between into their writings. A book that exemplifies this is the fantastic flying books of Morris Lessmore, written by William Joyce. Another author who applies this quote is J.R.R Tolkien who wrote the award-winning book The Hobbit. Tolkien was extremely influenced by fate and this is reflected in the book by the protagonist, Bilbo Baggins being impacted by fate as well. The rule of fate is that, whenever someone does something good, he is rewarded by ‘luck’, or in better words, guidance.
In the Hobbit, there are three types of situations in which fate reveals itself. One is when a

An example is when in the beginning of the book, Gandalf approaches Bilbo. Bilbo appreciates Gandalf and his fireworks and is inspired by him, causing Gandalf to respect Bilbo in return. This is an important event because Gandalf is portrayed to be a prophetic character in the book and helps Bilbo in many situations. Earning Gandalf’s respect increases Bilbo’s value as a person and the amount of support that he has. Another example is shown when Bilbo appreciates the elves, which are an allusion to angels. He is offered appreciation in return and is given guidance in the form of moon-letters. “Moon-letters are rune-letters, but you cannot see them…not when you look straight at them. They can only be seen when the moon shines behind them, and what is more, with the more cunning sort, it must be a moon of a same shape and season as the day when they were written.” Surprisingly enough, the moon was just right when the party confided in Elrond to educate them. If Bilbo had not shown appreciation to the elves, the party would have been very discouraged in the future for they would have been stuck without Elrond’s knowledge. Another example regarding the elves is when Bilbo receives the dream of the crack in the wall of the cave from which the goblins would soon ambush the party. If Bilbo had not received that particular dream, the expedition would have ended because the party would have been

Heroic journeys can happen in many different ways. Everyone has a journey in their life, not all are the same, as we can see in Moana and The hobbit. As we compare the heroic journeys of Moana and The Hobbit we can see The Hobbit creates a stronger heroic journey through analyzing the departure, initiation, and return. One of the part of a heroic journey is the departure, an example is in Moana how she has to leave her home island because her grandma has told her about the heart of tafiti and how Maui took it and she needs to go to find Maui and bring the heart of tafiti back to save their island, her dad did not want her to go because of he thinks the ocean is a very unsafe place due to his own memories from years ago, by leaving her island…

For instance, the soldiers in WWI that Tolkien was familiar with, defended their homeland, their family, and their comrades. In the hobbit’s heroic journey, his noble loyalty to the fellowship of dwarfs was tremendous, as he gained their trust and respect through the quest. Loyalty was one of the distinguishing characteristics that Bilbo possesses, and it holds great importance in his heroism since it was what Bilbo was trying to defend throughout the journey. In the beginning of the journey, neither the dwarfs nor the hobbit liked each other; their conflict was exacerbated by a difference in culture and strength. The dwarfs were disrespectful and criticized the hobbit’s ability, but Bilbo never became angry at them; in fact, as a hero, Bilbo learned from the dwarf’s criticism and proved his heroism to the dwarfs to gain respect.…

    The Hobbit And Greed

This is a popular theme that is in almost every chapter of The Hobbit. In The Hobbit, all the “bad guys” at some point in the story - the trolls, the goblins, Gollum, the Wargs, the giant spiders, the Wood-elves, the Master, Smaug, and Thorin - ended up with unfortunate, but well deserved, fates from humiliation to war to death. For example, how Thorin started a war based entirely on greed. Thorin did this because he was so obsessed with gold, silver, and gems which he got in the end, but it came with the death in death and war. In my life today, this can apply when choosing career options.…
