The book portrays empathy as an important aspect of being a human. Directly or indirectly, it shows that only humans have the ability to understand and share emotions of other humans or even animals. A great example of human empathy portrayed in the book is when Isidore is willing to risk his life to help Pris, Roy, and Irmgard even after he discovers they are androids. He can place himself in their position, and feel the same as androids when treated differently by humans. He values their prevalence over their differences. It shows that humans need a device to feel empathy for others. It was created and brought to earth right after the World War Terminus, which speaks volumes. The fact that the earth’s atmosphere was destroyed, many humans were contaminated with radiation and later dead, almost all animals had gone extinct, and millions had to leave their homes for other planets in hope of survival, shows the previews generation’s lack of empathy: The lack of empathy on the behalf of everyone who had been involved in the War.
