Dreams in Of Mice and Men
Without Dreams the World has no Future According to Langston Hughes, “Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.” Without dreams, a person many times sees no hope in their future. They feel as if they are stuck in that place with no hope of ever escaping. If a person has no hope, they many times see no point in living. Without their dreams they have nothing to look forward to, and nothing to strive for in life. There is no reason for them to work hard in life, because in the end they still get nothing. In John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men, there are multiple circumstances where characters lose the the chance of accomplishing their dreams. To them the world may

Curley’s Wife expressed her dream to Lennie stating, “Well, a show come through, an’ I met one of the actors. He says I could go with that show” (Steinbeck 88). Curley’s Wife’s dream was to become an actress and to be appreciated. The only reason she had married Curley was to escape her old lady who wouldn’t allow her to chase her dream. Ever since that one actor had given her hope, she had something to believe in. It gave her something to work for in life. It resulted in her marrying and escaping her mother. All of this she had done to try and fulfill her dream. However it all ended when, “. . . she was still, for Lennie had broken her neck” (Steinbeck 91). She only had to receive a letter from the actor, and her dream would have been reality. Although all this ended with her life. She never got the chance to live her dream. All of the hope and effort she had put in amounted to nothing. Again this would cause many people to see life as a cruel joke, as a place where when you get close to fulfilling your dream, it all gets taken away. This births the idea that there is no reason to dream, because it will only lead to disappointment. As an example, Curley’s Wife was one of the characters that lost the chance of ever …show more content…
Just like people today, the three characters all had dreams. Although in the end, none of them were able to accomplish them, leaving their life pointless. Many people have this outlook in today’s world. They believe that dreams are only there to torture you, giving a person the false hope of a better and brighter future, but they can never truly be accomplished. As a result, many people believe that dreams are cruel, as something that they will always try to reach, but never will. Dreams appear to them as only existing to tease them. Although without dreams, there is not a point to life. They give people a reason to their life. When someone does finally achieve their dream, all they have experienced is worthwhile. They have achieved something that many others had no hope in ever obtaining. By their example, others then have the hope of achieving their dreams. Without dreams, and the few people that attain them, it would be a hopeless world with a dull

like many of the characters in the novel, Curley's Wife likewise has a dream. Her dream is to be "in the movies." Many ladies amid the 1930's had a comparable dream like this as they contemplated the warmth that would take after, albeit even in Steinbeck's cruel world it is clarified dreams are just dreams and the break of trust is unmistakably unavoidable even in a sensitive individual, for example, Curley's Wife. On the whole, Curley's Wife is essential all through the novel as she expands the extent of a significant number of the key occasions and subjects which happen. Steinbeck utilizes her as a vehicle at an ideal opportunity to depict the ladies amid the 1930's.…

Throughout the novel and before the novel even begins, however, Lennie makes it nearly impossible for his dream to be achieved, ultimately leading to his death. Furthermore, it is seen that dreams can lead to a sense of false hope, though it is not a pleasant idea; Lennie is so set on living his dream that he fails to realize that the dream is impractical. Part of this could be caused by Lennie’s mental disability, but that still does not change the fact that Lennie’s dream never does come true. In addition, Curley’s wife tells Lennie that she always had a dream to become a movie star; she says, “Coulda been in the movies, an’ had nice clothes… An’ I coulda sat in them big hotels an’ had pitchers took of me…” and that she “don’ like Curley”(Steinbeck 89).…

Personifying dreams to be dead or gone, it symbolizes that if that happens, they would be missed and mourned. The poet compares life with dead dreams to a broken-winged bird that cannot fly (stanza 1).…
