Does A Thousand Splendid Suns Portray Domestic Abuse In Afghanistan Accurately?

Domestic abuse is a problem that occurs in many different countries, and with all types of people. The problem is when abuse is not seen as a problem in certain countries, along with not being addressed. Domestic abuse is very prominent in the book A Thousand Splendid Suns and is a large part of the book. The book portrays domestic abuse in Afghanistan accurately. Domestic abuse is more common in women and little girls who are forced to be married. Such as Mariam in A Thousand Splendid Suns, she was forced to marry a man half her age by her father. This happens very commonly in Afghanistan and usually leads to horrible abuse (”Afghanistan, domestic violence...”).

After this the rage sets in, and Rasheed is out for blood. He nearly beat Laila to death, because he knows he can. He will more than likely get only two years for her blood if that since he could accuse her of adultery. On the other hand on page 366 Mariam had murdered Rasheed and is now being given the highest penalty; death. In Afghanistan, this is how the law works, in favor of males. Murder is a violent crime, and no matter who you are it should be treated equally (”Afghanistan's Domestic Violence Loophole”). This book portrays how Afghanistan laws treat women …show more content…
The signs of a toxic relationship shown in the book line up with textbook signs in reality. When dealing with the police both in the book and reality women in Afghanistan have a low chance of getting help. The book also portrays the law accurately by showing that the legal system definitely prefers one gender over the other. The accuracy is completely there and after researching it can be said that A Thousand Splendid Suns accurately portrays domestic
