In Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and many other novels, characters are deceived by others. This deception is used to either help or harm a character. In Pride and Prejudice, the character, George Wickham, deceives others and toys with their emotions in order to fulfill his wishes. Wickham is always in search of money because he wastes all the money he has in foolish ways. In attempts to gain a fortune he deceives others in many ways. George Wickham is a militiaman who is very dishonest with all of the characters he encounters in the novel. Elizabeth met Wickham when she and her sisters were accompanied by Mr.Collins to Meryton. Lydia met her friend, Mr.Denny who was an officer, who introduced the sisters to Wickham. They also see Mr.Bingley and Mr.Darcy while talking with the other men. Elizabeth noticed that Darcy and Wickham were very cold with each other. When they went to a dinner party held by the Phillip’s, Wickham and Elizabeth had a conversation in which Wickham tells the story of his life and relationship with Mr.Darcy. Elizabeth instantly likes and trusts Wickham which allows him to deceive her. He explains how the Darcy is a terrible man who left him penniless by cheating him out of the late Mr.Darcy’s fortune. Elizabeth is deceived by Wickham into believing that Darcy was a proud and terrible man. Wickham gave Elizabeth a feeling of disgust towards Mr.Darcy due to his dishonest stories of Mr.Darcy’s character. The motive behind Wickham deceiving Elizabeth is that he has romantic feelings for Elizabeth, but these feelings soon fade when he finds out that she has a little fortune. He wanted to eliminate the threat of Darcy having a romantic relationship with Elizabeth so he told Elizabeth lies to make her think that Darcy was an evil man. Wickham also deceives Lydia Bennet. Lydia was a flirtatious young woman and was easily manipulated. When Wickham gave her the slightest attention, she was under his spell. He was said to be an attractive man, which makes him irresistable in the eyes of Lydia. He deceived Lydia into thinking that he loved her and wanted to run off and marry her, but he just wanted to have sex with her and leave her feeling alone and shameful. This deception was meant to harm Lydia because by doing what he intended, he would be destroying the Bennet family’s reputation.
