The characters in the play are Puritans, who sought to purify the Church of England. These people weren’t allowed to judge or hate their neighbors. The "witch hunt" allowed people in Salem to accomplish "long-held hatreds of neighbors which could be openly expressed, and vengeance taken" as well as "old scores could be settled on a plane of heavenly combat between Lucifer and the Lord". It allowed them to discriminate against those they were intolerant to and feel righteous about it. Specific examples from the play include Abigail Williams discrimination against and intolerance for Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail, the alleged accuser, sets Elizabeth up by saying she stuck a pin into Abigail's stomach using witchcraft. A political slander, known as McCarthyism has been around since the beginning of politics. McCarthyism is when American people accuse another party of treason. It got its name when a man named McCarthy, the senator of Illinois, sought out to cleanse America of communist. McCarthy used blacklistings to force the well off people of hollywood, to confess to crimes never committed. Digging a little deeper one will come to the realization of what McCarthyism really is.
