Theme Of Diction In The Odyssey

The abilities of diction to portray a leader.

Throughout various great works of literature the language used to describe the hero or heroine is a formidable tool. To have the ability to describe a person, place, or object with purpose, clarity and poise can transport the reader into a new realm of understanding. What once was just paper with words written on it now becomes a vivid and colorful work of art in the mind’s eye. Homer was able to show that Odysseus is a competent leader through the expressive use of diction.

Thru part one of The Odyssey Odysseus is put through variable tests as a leader. In the beginning Homer uses a variety of words to describe Odysseus as a person. “ Sing in me, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man

Odysseus tells his crew of what Circe foresaw of their death with the Sirens and how Odysseus alone was to bear the burden of their song. He instructed his crew to tie him up, tight as splint, erect along the mast, lashed to the mast, and no matter whether he shouts or begs they are not to untie him; only to take more rope to muffle him (882.745-756). The way Homer describes Odysseus’ dedication and valor to his crew shows the precise way this hero grew into a great leader.

At the end of part two the story shows that Odysseus has not only learned strength and leadership thru his 20 year journey but we also saw how he has kept his compassion. “Now from his breast into his eyes the ache of longing mounted, and he wept at last” (916.1613-1615). Homer is able to show the true depth of this hero which allowed us the ability to weep alongside Odysseus.

If it wasn’t for Homer’s beautiful words and ability to paint such a wonderful picture, his peers would not be able to feel the gut wrenching pain that Odysseus felt throughout his 20 year journey. It made others aware of the pure love he felt to be home with his son and dear wife. Homers imaginary use of diction took a simple tale of Greek Gods and adventures from black and white to Technicolor. Without it, it would not be the great piece of literary history it is

The idea of control is dominant not only in current affairs, but, as The Odyssey by Homer demonstrates, it has been on the forefront of many relations since before the development of politics. The Odyssey presents an intriguing scenario in terms of control by presenting characters who seem to have it all together but in reality don’t and vice-versa. For example, though Odysseus is the hero of The Odyssey, he has relatively little control over his life compared to his wife Penelope. Penelope uses her mind and intelligence to control the people around her. Odysseus, on the other hand, has less control over his life because of the gods’ constant interference with it and the fate he is facing, but he is still able to control the impressions…

One would think that good leaders would not try to demoralize their crew, even if the circumstances are not going in their favor. Likewise, Odysseus is showing the lack of his leadership by not making the logical decision by not listening to the song of the Seirenes. He again is lacking in Homer’s expectation of Arete by not showing excellence or being a good leader, which should be the goal in one’s life. On the outside, Odysseus is perceived as a good leader and person, but once one starts peeling the layers back of his personality his true colors start to show. He also puts an unnecessary burden on the shoulders of his men and himself that would have been avoided if not for Odysseus’s narcissistic morals.…

In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus demonstrates bravery as a trait of exceptional leadership when he fearlessly rescues his crew from permanently being transformed by Circe’s magical potion. After Eurylokhos, one of Odysseus’s crewmen, leads a search group onto the island of Circe, he returns from Circe’s hall so horrified he is unable to speak, with “blinding tears” pooling in his eyes (Homer 172, 272). By questioning Eurylokhos about the events that took place at Circe’s house, Odysseus learns his men are in some sort of danger, and therefore is determined to retrieve them at once. Hubris, another word for excessive self pride, is frequently a struggle that is faced by Odysseus when consulting the gods or any other threatening forces. Eventually Odysseus is able to overcome his hubris when he realizes that the gods are ultimately on his side after all. At this point he comes to the realization that the gods control his life; “It is no hard thing for the gods of heaven to glorify a man or bring him low" (Book XVI, 250-251). As one can see, Odysseus experiences a mental change in which he sees the world in different way than he did previously. In addition, his true transformation takes place when he realizes the gods place in society as opposed to his own; ““My life runs on then as the gods have spun it.”…
