The character Miss Bingley criticizes Mr. Darcy and his admiration for Elizabeth Bennet. “Miss Bingley saw, or suspected enough to be jealous… received some assistance from her desire of getting rid of Elizabeth.” Miss Bingley was attracted to Mr. Darcy, and desired him for herself. She did everything in her power to sway Darcy away from Elizabeth whenever she had the chance, “… and her attentions to Mr. Darcy were by no means over.” Miss Bingley consistently desired attention from Mr. Darcy, yet her efforts were meaningless. Because she was after getting him to admit who he really had feelings for, she “…having forced him to say what gave no one any pain but herself.” This shows how desire through jealousy can lead to pain and hurt. Miss Bingley realized soon enough that her desires were not going to be fulfilled. Darcy would eventually marry Elizabeth, and that was out of her control. Austen uses Miss Bingley as an antagonist in the novel. Her jealousy creates a desire of malice for those around her, and she becomes a sarcastic and critical character.
