Lord Capulet didn’t follow the marriage customs by asking Paris to wait for Juliet’s hand in marriage and Paris complied with his wishes. Lord Capulet ended up going against his own word and asking Paris to rush the marriage to Juliet. Capulet cared about Juliet’s opinion in the beginning and was breaking arranged marriage laws and asking for Paris to woo her and get her to love him. In the end, he got mad and didn’t care if Juliet loved Paris or not. Lord Capulet says, “But woo her, gentle Paris, get her heart; / My will to her consent is but a part. / An she agree, within her scope of choice / Lies my consent and fair according voice,” (1.2.16-19). Whether it is the faulty plan of Friar Lawrence, the changing wedding expectations of Lord Capulet, or the terrible decisions Paris makes on his own, the outcome is the same, a tragic loss of life. If the Friar would have been honest to Paris and not given Juliet the plan to get out of the marriage, Paris might not have been so adamant to marry Juliet. If Lord Capulet would have kept to his word or maybe followed marriage customs, Paris wouldn’t have to follow like a puppet on a string. Finally, if Paris himself had made better decisions like keeping the torch light on, not hiding from Romeo and introducing himself before fighting, he might have survived the fight in the tomb.
