Starling states that she was alone after her father 's death since her mother was not around indicating she had to get over what happened on her own. The cocoon signifies the entrapment she felt as a child being forced inside a cage of her own pain. However, like a moth, Clairece is able to break out from the cocoon of pain that once trapped her transforming her like a larva stuck on the ground to a moth that rises above all others. Without the process of grief that she went through because of her father 's death, it’s not clear if she would have taken the same path in life and thus may never have become such a motivated student.
