The story setting is in New Orleans around the late 40’s early 50’s. The story was written by Tennessee Williams. Tennessee Williams is an American playwright and actor. He is one of the 3 most famous playwrights of the 20th century American drama. Most of his stories or plays were inspired by his personal life and family. He wrote many successful story one of which ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ that won many awards, recognitions and appraises from both plays, adaptations, interpretations and movies. In the 1940’s gay were not so common. Most gays were “in the closet”. In the military, soldiers that were caught having gay intercourse were discharged. Gay soldiers were victim of bully and abused “The one story that sticks out for me is his being in the army, fellow soldiers tying him to a tree and beating him.” (Berland). Since, it was absurd for two men to have sex, most men were married with kids and would hook up with other men in secret. This type of behavior can be seen in African countries were gay is seeing as a crime. There is nothing one person could do to cover it up. I think Blanche try to cover it up by moving from Mississippi to her sister’s house in New Orleans. After World War II, America was seen as an exemplary country, therefore those kind of scandals would have never made the headlines in the new in order to keep the nation’s positive image.
This play summarized every domestic scandal that we have in today’s society. From suicide to rape, from having sex with student to husband cheating on their wives with another man. Everyone that read or watch this play would be discussed by the series of scandals that took place. I feel discussed by Mitch character because when Blanche opened up to him because she likes him, he tried to rape her. I’m even more discussed with Stanley because He raped her and after she caught a mental breakthrough he told her wife that Blanche was mentally sick.
